Cartagena de Indias, named World Heritage Site by UNESCO- in 1982, is an open-air museum. The city offers visitors the opportunity to walk along its 11 kilometres of colonial city walls, which stand as the most well-preserved military architecture (XVI to XVIII centuries) of the Americas and the most complete fortifications in South America. Its landmarks and monuments represent the most extensive example of Spanish colonial architecture in the New World and remains one of the most complete collection of historical landmarks in the western hemisphere.
